Dr. Derek Van Berkel, CLARS Co-PI was featured on the BBC news emphasizing the need for cities int eh Great Lakes region to proactively prepare for potential migration. As climate change intensifies, areas like California are experiencing more frequent and severe wildfires, prompting residents to seek refuge in regions perceived as safer, such as Duluth and Minnesota. Dr. Van Berkel warns that while the Great Lakes area may currently seem less vulnerable to climate disasters, it is not immune to the impacts of climate change, including wildfire smoke and other environmental stressors.
